Can I make my own Living Glass at home?

Making Living Glass is best done at the lab. Our products are created under sterile environments using HEPA filters that remove 99.97% of airborne pathogens. Allowing a single mould/bacteria spore into the vessel will cause the gel to spoil.

What is the Living Glass production facility like?

We share lab space with the Jones Lab, at the University of Guelph. We’re well equipped with all the necessary tools and instruments needed for gel production, plant propogation, and product assembly. Our plants are grown in walk-in growth chambers that are fully decked out in specialized LED lights.

What is Living Glass’ affiliation with the University of Guelph?

We share lab space with the Jones Lab, at the University of Guelph however, we are not affiliated with or owned by the University.

Does Living Glass offer custom displays?

Within reason, we will take on a custom project. Whether it is for a company/business or a personal project, we’re happy to consider it. Contact us directly if this is something you are interested in!

Where do we source our plants?

All our plants are grown in-house, here in Canada. Our original stock were sourced from local growers or purchased from reputable businesses across the globe. We’ll never take plants out of the wild unless it is for a conservation project.

Why opt for Living Glass over other plants?

Living Glass are far easier to keep than most houseplants. Everything required for the plant to grow is contained in one, crystal clear glass orb. Unlike other houseplants that require adequately lit spaces and frequent watering to grow well, Living Glass products will happily grow just about anywhere without a single care instruction. A unique aspect about our products is that we use plants that you normally can’t grow as houseplants, so you know you have something unique.

About the Product

What are the care requirements for Living Glass?

Absolutely nothing. No fertilizer, sunlight, or water required. The only thing to consider is to keep it out of direct sunlight so the gel does not melt.

Is the gel made of animal products?

Our gel is 100% vegan. No animals or plants were harmed in the production of Living Glass.

Can I open the Living Glass bottle?

Never open the bottle as it will introduce contaminants to the gel, compromising the health of the plant. If you intend to transfer the plant to a pot for further growth, once opened, you will not be able to return it to the glass.

Can I continue to grow the plant after it has overgrown the bottle?

Of course, it is entirely possible to grow the plant after it has consumed the gel. Each species of plant is listed on our website and it is recommended to research the out-of-glass care for each species.

Is Living Glass environmentally friendly?

Yes! Our vessel is made out of glass and our gel is completely non-toxic.

My Living Glass has some mold growing on the gel — what should I do?

Unfortunately it seems like a contaminant has gotten into the vessel and it should be discarded immediately. While this is incredibly rare, we do offer 1-week warranties on our products if it is purchased directly from the site. All our products undergo a vigorous 1-week quality control period where we ensure every unit is ready for sale.

Is Living Glass child and pet friendly?

While the product is non-toxic, it is generally not recommended for young children since the glass can shatter when dropped. Never leave it in an area where a child or pet can knock it over. It is not recommended to consume the gel.

Will my plant change colour to match the gel?

A common science experiment is watching a white flower sit in a jar of blue water and eventually becoming a blue flower. Fortunately, plants in coloured Living Glass products will not experience this same phenomenon. Rest assured that your beautiful green plant will remain that color even in a blood red gel.

Do we have to feed the carnivorous plant?

Our product line mostly features carnivorous plants but ironically they’re vegan. Our gel media provides all the nutrients for the plant so that feeding them insects isn’t necessary.

My Living Glass died during transit. Can I get a return?

Living glass are all backed by a 1-week guarantee after the arrival of the ornament at your door. Unsealing the ornament, tampering with the ornament, neglectful placement of the ornament, or inability to provide photographic proof within the 1-week period will void the warranty. Each of our ornaments are sealed with a special adhesive so we would require evidence to show that the seal is still intact. How long the living glass will live will vary significantly depending on your growing conditions. Our ornaments were tested at room temperature (23 ℃) under ambient lighting (300 LUX). Higher temperatures, brighter light, or genetic variances may accelerate the life span.

I didn’t get my Living Glass from the website….

Unfortunately, we do not offer any warranties or guarantees on Living Glass purchased from third party sources.
